Radical Discipleship Small Group Resources
To accompany Martin Dunkley's book Radical Discipleship we asked Ellie Hart of Community Church Derby to produce some small group notes that help people apply some of the teaching. Its not necessary for the group members or the leader to have read the book in order to be able to do the studies but it is available as an extra resource for those who want to go deeper.
These small group resources are not so much a ready meal as an á la carte menu. They provide a range of sections, ideas and choices from which you can build a fruitful evening session for a small group.
Churches have different aims and aspirations for their small groups, including Bible study, personal discipleship, free or guided discussion and outreach.
The style adopted will also depend the spiritual maturity of group members and leader.
Nevertheless, a healthy diet usually consists of different food types, and we recommend that you pick one item from each section below, although you can also use this as a ‘pick-and-mix’ resource and create a small group session to suit your group and objectives.
We recommend that you
- plan in advance
- decide which bits from each section you’re going to use
- decide the best order for your group
- decide who is going to lead each part
In each week there will be
- an Apertitif: a game or open question to help you gather and get going
- a Starter: a video clip from Martin Dunkley or quotation to be read out that introduces the theme for the week
- an Appetizer: a suggested activity for worship or reflection connected to the theme
- a choice of two Main Courses (one light, one slightly more substantial) involving a video clip from Ellie Hart and guided questions for Bible Study)
- a Dessert: a suggestion of how the group could be outward looking
The video clips can be watched online through the links in the left hand menu of this website or downloaded as wmv or mpg files below.
(wmv files are ~20MB and are the normal ones you play in Windows Media Player; mpg are ~140MB, higher quality but you might want to test your media player can play them; if in doubt you can download the free VLC player here)
